This week, the BRC team are pleased to be looking at a Day in the Life of a Bristol social housing recruitment specialist.
Mark Grove, a Recruitment Business Manager for Social Housing at BRC recently celebrated 20 years of continuous service with the company.
He spoke to us about his time with BRC Jobs so far as a social housing recruitment specialist, and why he loves working within the sector.
Why did you join the company in the first place?
“BRC has 22 years’ specialist experience in social housing recruitment, with a huge amount of knowledge that benefits both clients and candidates. I was really impressed with the team and ethos from the start.”
What attracted you to social housing recruitment?
“It’s a sector that didn’t use recruitment agencies much and I could see that BRC could provide a superb service. It has expanded steadily and is always growing due to changes in government and legislation. it is a very fluid market.”
Do you have a typical daily routine as a social housing recruiter?
“Not really, although I start most days by prioritising my workload which could be checking job advert responses and candidate emails or deciding which clients to call. Then I’ll send candidate CVs from those responses to clients such as Bristol City Council, Plymouth Community Housing, LiveWest, Brighter Places, Aster Group and Coastline housing.”
“Each day involves speaking to clients about roles they have and new positions that are upcoming, as well as speaking to new contacts in the sector.”
“In the afternoon, I’ll have meetings with candidates about their requirements. I also see clients face-to-face or over Teams to chat about what they need.”
What do you particularly like about your role?
“My job is all about people and listening to them and their needs within social housing. The people are brilliant. Social housing recruitment involves lots of relationship building.”
Is social housing recruitment different to other recruitment consultancy roles?
“Very much so. Recruitment is generally seen as a sales-driven job. There is a sales environment at BRC Jobs, but it is not a hard sell.”
What service do you offer at BRC Jobs?
“We offer a service that gives temporary cover when people are sick, covering peak workloads and permanent roles for positions that need filling quickly.”
“Lots of checks are carried out and social housing is a very diligent sector.”
Why have you remained with BRC Jobs for 20 years?
“I really like the specialism of dealing with a particular person and skillset, which is why I love working in social housing recruitment. BRC Jobs really know the market.”
